New Book Releases for the Fall

While I am very aware of my Kindle wishlist year round, the fall has a special place in my heart.  The fall is when the highly anticipated books of the year are released and I have pre-ordered quite a few in preparation.  The following are my ten pre-orders that will be released over the next few months and, oh boy, am I excited?

September 4th – The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting up a Generation for Failure by Jonathan Haidt

From the writer of The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, comes a book about political polarization and the current environment on college campuses.

September 10th – Big Debt Crises by Ray Dalio

On the 10th anniversary of the Financial Crisis of 2008, founder and CIO of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world, describes how financial crises occur and how to properly handle them.

September 18th – Leadership in Turbulent Times

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Doris Kearns Goodwin, comes a book on Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson (in civil rights), on how they handled leadership in, you guessed it, turbulent times.

I will be attending a talk by her and Gen. Petraeus on September 20th at the 92nd St Y.

October 2nd – The Fifth Risk

Written by Michael Lewis, one of the best at turning non-fiction into an enjoyable narrative, about what happens if the people who take over the government have no idea how it works.  Unfortunately based on a true story of the months succeeding the 2016 election.

October 2nd – Mastering the Market Cycle

Howard Marks wrote it. So I’m reading it. He is the king of distressed credit and founder of Oaktree Capital.

October 16th – Capitalism in America: A History

Written by former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, this book discusses the evolution of America of small, separate colonies to a powerful engine of wealth and innovation.

October 23rd – How the Internet Happened

A history of the internet from Netscape to the iPhone and why it exploded and changed everything.

November 23rd – The Model Thinker

Recommended to me via Twitter by Michael Mauboussin, this book intends to show how to apply multiple models to organize data, make pretty predictions, and lead to better choices.

Bonus

February 5th, 2019 – Digital Minimalism

Not exactly a fall book, but on my pre-order list and written by Cal Newport, who wrote an awesome book called Deep Thought about the importance of mono-tasking and doing first things first.

Each of these books is by either a seasoned author whose books I’ve read before or come highly recommended by experts that I trust in the field.  Hopefully, you will add a few to your Kindle so when the clock strikes midnight on their release date, you can start reading immediately.
